When it comes to government jobs, aspirants think of UPSC, bank, railways, defence, schools and colleges or at best the fuel and aviation sectors. However, there are many more government organisations that offer attractive employment opportunities which many are not aware of.

1. Power Finance Corporation
One of the Navratna companies, Power Finance Corporation Ltd. is a financial institution and is the pivot of the country’s power sector. Earlier, the Government of India used to own it, but the company issued an IPO in January 2007, which was oversubscribed by 76 times, largest for any Indian company in last few decades. 2. Water and Power Consultancy Services (WAPCOS)
A part of Ministry of Water Resource of Indian Government, the Water and Power Consultancy Services is a leading consultancy company that has won the Mini Ratna tag. Water and Power Consultancy Services enjoys global presence in more than 50 nations and offers consultancy services in power, infrastructure and water resources. Bhakra Management Board was formed in 1966 for the maintenance, operation and administration of Bhakra Nangal Project. BBMB monitors the operation of the dam since October 01, 1967 and is represented by members from GoI and states like Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh. In 1976 Bhakra Management Board got the name BBMB Bhakra Beas Management Board as it started managing dams on river Beas and regulating water and power supply to the above mentioned state governments. 5. Defence Contractor
Known as an individual corporation, Defence Contractor provides products and services to India’s military and intelligence department. The product repertoire of HOCL include Acetone, Phenol, Nitrobenzene, Nitrotoluenes, Chlorobenzenes Aniline, and Nitrochlorobenzenes. The organisation makes basic organic chemicals like drugs and pharmaceuticals, pesticides, plastics, resins and laminates, dyes and dyestuffs, rubber chemicals, textile auxiliaries, paints, and explosives. 7. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SSCL)
When it comes to coal mining in India, the only name that most of us are aware of is Coal India. However, it is important to know about the other similar company especially if you are looking for jobs in the field. This company is called Singareni Collieries Company Limited or SCCL – one of the oldest coal giants of our country founded in 1920. It is a public sector undertaking, jointly owned by the Union government (51% stake) and state government of Telangana (49% stake). The Ministry of Coal under GoI takes care of the administration of the company. At present, the company operates 32 underground mines and 16 opencast mines in fout districts of Telangana. 8. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)
One of the largest and oldest medical research bodies in the world, The Indian Council of Medical Research is the apex body of our country for the coordination formulation and promotion of biomedical research. Department of Health Research under GoI funds ICMR which runs 26 national Institutes all over India. It is a great organisation for medical professionals as these 26 institutes are premier in the field of research like leprosy, cholera and diarrheal, TB, viral diseases including AIDS, nutrition, vector control, food and drug toxicology, oncology, reproduction, medical statistics, etc. For those in the field of medical research, ICMR can be the Mecca.
9. The Coir Board
Coir Board, a statutory body, was established by the GoI under the ‘Coir Industry Act 1953’, COIR manages the development and promotion of coconut fiber called coir. Headquartered in Kochi the company has training and research centers in Kalavoor, Alappuzha. It has regional offices in different parts of India and employs more than lakh employees. 10. Scooters India Limited (SIL)
Scooters are anachronistic, but SIL- Scooters India limited is doing quite well and is recruiting also. The government undertaking is based in Lucknow, UP. In 1972 we bought the machinery of the Milanese factory (Lambretta), and formed Scooters India Limited so that we can makeLambro three-wheeler for our domestic market under the name Vikram.
