Mechanical Engineering is one of the oldest engineering branches that fulfil the demand of individual component, machinery and different systems and sub-systems. As Mechanical Engineering plays an important role in automobile industries, the course covers automotive curriculum through a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Apart from automobile and transport industry, mechanical engineers mostly work in various other heavy industries, including, aerospace, biomedical, construction and building, manufacturing, power processes, service stations, railways and defence services. The advanced curriculum of Automobile Manufacturing is structured to create professionals having desired skills for the innumerable career options in the field.
The approach in imparting the courses involves rigorous and comprehensive academic program covering theory, fundamentals, and hands-on experience with real-world applications.
Courses
Courses include Diploma in Automotive Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering in Automotive Engineering/ Technology in Automotive Engineering, Master of Technology in Automotive Engineering/ Technology in Automotive Engineering
The students can specialize in domains like engine systems, electronics and control systems, fuel technology and emissions, fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, rapid prototyping, alternative fuels, computer-based systems and electronics, emissions control or vehicle and pedestrian safety or supply chain management.
Duration
4 years for B.Tech
6 years for B.Tech and M.Tech
Eligibility Criteria
In order to pursue automobile engineering, students should pass class 12 with Physics, Maths, Chemistry/ Computer Science with at least 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognized board in India. Aspirants for IITs, must clear JEE Main and Advanced, entry to NITs depend on JEE Main score. Students with bachelor’s degree or B. Tech in Automobile Engineering from recognized Universities can opt for post graduation in the field.
The basic eligibility for diploma courses in automobile engineering is to clear 10+2 in science stream with 50% marks in PCM subjects from recognized University.
Institutes to study Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Automobile Manufacturing
Institutes for studying Automobile Engineering are the – IITs of Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Mandi, Madras, Bhubaneswar, Hyderabad, Roorkee and Indore. Other institutes are 10 most sought after NITs including Tiruchirappalli, Warangal, Karnataka, Calicut, Hamirpur, Delhi, Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology Bhopal, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur Visvesvaraya and National Institute of Technology, Nagpur.
Private Universities like Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), VIT University, SRM University and Manipal University also offer courses in automobile engineering.
Career Prospects
Globally, India is the 7th largest automobile producer with average annual production of 17.5 million motor vehicles and contributes 7% of the country’s GDP by volume and is the 4th largest automotive market by mass.
Industry leaders also predict a sale of more than 6 million vehicles by 2020. India undoubtedly being a prospective automobile market career opportunities in the sector is significantly high. Modi government’s ‘The Automotive Mission Plan’ (AMP) II 2016-26, gives further scope for opportunities in the field. Skilled resources with ingenous ideas for conceptualising more advanced machines can make it big here.
Mechanical Engineering students have options for main stream jobs which include designing, developing, implementing, testing and evaluating equipment and machines. Students with specialization in automobile manufacturing will be preferred by the automobile companies who dominate the recruitment scene in the field of mechanical engineering. B.Tech/M.Tech degrees will provide students with advanced knowledge and skills and help them learn innovative design and system creations, apart from giving them ample research opportunities. Candidates with automobile engineering degrees can work as automobile designer/ technician, bike/diesel/car mechanics, or can opt for positions like executive and managerial positions at relevant companies.
