The GRE score plays an important role in your MS applications and admission process. But, it’s certainly not the single most vital component. When it comes to evaluation, the admission officers are going to look at your overall profile – GPA, CV, Statement of Purpose, Letters of Recommendation, internships and work experience along with your GRE score. It’s a reality that someone with 311 can get into a University where the average GRE score of accepted candidates is 324. Similarly, an applicant with 330 might fail to get admitted to the same university in the same intake.
If you somehow end up with an average or low GRE score, it’s not the end of the world. If you get a GRE score of 320+, you certainly increase your chances of getting admitted to the top schools with brand and repute. But, the US has got hundreds of good quality universities for graduate studies and research. Even if you score less than 320 or 310, you can still have a shot at the Top 100 US universities, provided you choose your universities strategically and all the remaining components of your application are strong enough.
So, let’s have a look at the universities where you can have a better chance of admission with a GRE score in the range of 300 and 320. I have also listed the fees, acceptance rates, chances (or availability) of financial aid (scholarships), and standard of living expenses. Please be advised, this list is for giving you all an idea; so use this list as for a reference purpose only. Do refer to the university/program pages and other websites as well. 2. Opt for Professional Guidance & Admission Consulting
If you somehow couldn’t increase your score, or you haven’t got enough time to re-appear for GRE, you can still improve your admission chances. As discussed in the beginning, the GRE score is just one component of your application kit. In fact, a great GRE score doesn’t always guarantee your dream university. It is true that universities will look into your GRE score, but that should not deter you if you think you’re good.
The admissions committee (ad-com) looks at a lot of things before making a decision, like your motivation, potential, publications, relevant job experience etc. If you didn’t have a job that’s fine as well; after all, you are applying for MS (and not MBA or PhD). They want to judge if you are really interested in that program and whether you can successfully finish the course. The ad-com will also look for research interests and if you have put any extra effort (say taking relevant online courses from Coursera, Udemy or EdX). Have a look at the Best Curated Online Courses. Your SOP is important, think as you are talking in front of the ad-com and explaining why they should accept you.
It’s also advantageous to work with admission counselors (or admission consultants in alternative terms). I do advise to approach admission consultants by all means if you think that’s in your interest. But don’t treat it like outsourcing. They are not going to write the SoP, CV or LoR for you. Firstly, it’s unethical. Secondly, that’s not going to work for you in the short-term or long-term.
Whether in India, US, China, Brazil, Nigeria, Spain or virtually any place around the globe that sends lots of students to top universities in the US, Canada, Germany, Singapore and other study abroad destinations, there are thousands and thousands of companies, agencies and individuals who are paid to help students select universities to apply to and to help them get into those universities.
Not all that long ago there were very few people in the admission consulting (for UG, MS, MBA college admissions) business. Now there are thousands. The admission has been transformed at some of the highly selective universities (especially those with low acceptance rates). Each year applications increase at virtually all highly ranked schools. Some have nearly doubled application numbers in the last decade. So, working with admission consultants can certainly work in your favor.
Of course, you can work on your applications, and I recommend doing that – research on the internet, and check out various (but credible) education and study abroad portals. But, working with a consultant can certainly improve your chances.
But, be careful about choosing the right (not the best) consultant for yourself. Besides, decide what you need help with. It might be possible that you are done with university selection, and only need someone to review and edit your SoP. Sometime, you might need just a 1:1 session to decide whom to take recommendation letters (LoRs) from. So, in those cases, there is no need for an end-to-end package at all.
For anyone looking for a consultant should understand that there is no magic in the process. Consultants cannot get an average candidate into an Ivy League or Elite school. But, they can suggest things, which transform the applications from average to above-average and good to great. It’s as simple as that.
I do realize that it’s not always possible for everyone to opt for paid consulting. That’s why I always try to pen down the blogs to inform everyone so that they can be benefitted from their application process. But, if you need personalized guidance, then it’s just like any other consulting service.
